--A couple of days ago, Ryan and I managed to break open a Magic 8 Ball. This was no mean feat, I assure you - those things are virtually indestructible. But through a combination of prying with a screwdriver, melting with a candle, and strong percussion with a shovel, we managed to break it open and get the trophy - the little white plastic die that has all the answers on it. Yay! To tell the truth, it felt rather like killing a sperm whale for the little bit of ambergris...

(The blue dye is finally fading from under my fingernails, too.)

--I stayed up fairly late packing last night. I also could not find my Palm Pilot so I downloaded an alarm clock program for my computer. Except it didn't go off. I therefore ended up waking up at approximately 12:08, eight minutes after I was supposed to be at work. After muttering the requisite "oh, shit", I managed to get dressed and get a cab here in record time, arriving only slightly over 15 minutes late. Which means, if I skip my break, I won't have to stay later to make up the time.

Fortunately this is the first time I've ever shown up late for work, and I even called and stuff, so nobody's mad at me. I still feel bad, though. And if it turns out my brother stole my Palm Pilot, blood will be spilled.

--I move into Annie's house today. To tell the truth, this would be slightly more exciting if I remembered the house number, or had more than a vague clue of where it's located. Unfortunately, having only been there a couple of times, I'm going to have to walk around the area a bit until I find it and remember to write down the house number. ><

--My copy of Dune's "Expedicion" got here from England yesterday. I now have pretty much the entire complement of their CD's that I'm looking for...there's maybe one more that I'm interested in, but they don't have a listing for it anywhere that I've looked (Gemm, Amazon, etc.) and the only thing that makes me think it exists is that, according to CDDB.com, it's the one on which the song "Starchild" is located. So on the off chance anyone's seen a copy of a CD called "Raving Fremmen", let me know.

--It's slightly depressing, when one is working from a printout of all the DVD's the library owns, to see exactly how many of them are listed as "Lost" or "Checked Out" with due dates of anywhere from a couple of months to a year ago.

If I'm ever an actual librarian, I'm going to have to post a picture of myself in my corset getup, holding my crop over my head, with the caption "The Library (Head)Mistress does not approve of bringing library materials back late!"

--Two and a half more weeks, and I'm back in Juneau...

I've moved my stuff over to Annie's place, which is fairly cozy. A bit smallish, but for one person it's fine - most of the space issues have to do with the fact that she's already got her stuff here. She was nice enough to set up her drawing table so I could use my sewing machine on it, and there's a very nice setup to connect my computer to the speakers and the Internet. Her dog is perhaps a bit on the big side, but very well-behaved and sweet. If I was planning on getting a dog I'd want one like her.

It's a nice enough day here in Barrow, too - sunny, 60 degrees or so, very little wind. Lots of mosquitoes, but then, you can't have everything.

About, oh, seven or eight years ago, when I was hanging out at my then-best-friend's house, I picked up one of her (many) Baby-Sitters' Club books just for something to read. The particular one was Mary Anne's Bad Luck Mystery, and while I've always been a fast reader, I only got through two-thirds of it before Kristine (my friend) decided she wanted to *do* something. I never got around to finishing it, and I've occasionally wondered what happened to Mary Anne and the rest of the BSC crew. So guess what was on the giveaway table at the library today? Admittedly, I've had the opportunity to read the rest of the story before now, but I never quite had the time...so I finally figured "hey, why not?", picked it up, and read the whole thing in a couple of hours. So I finally know what happens now. Yay me. =)

Day off tomorrow. I'm probably going to run a few boxes down to the post office, start my new sewing project and get some groceries. Or maybe I'll just stay here and read all day. Who knows?

Going now. Carry on, everyone.
