I live about 20 miles from VA, and a whole lot of my good friends are disgusted and outraged at this legislation. You sum it up well here - but I find it hard to the point of impossible to believe that these legislators honestly didn't understand what a transvaginal ultrasound entails. I'm so disappointed in them.

On the up side. MD (where I live) just got the bill passed by both halves of the state legislature to ensure the protection of the rights of gay couples to marry. Our governor has promised to sign it into law if it hits his desk. We're all hoping that a lot of couples are going to be very, very happy this weekend.

Related: did you see the clip of the news conference where the gentleman from NJ, Mayor Cory Booker, takes 5 minutes to respond to an off-topic question regarding his opinion of a state-wide referendum on the topic of gay marriage? I spent the first minute and fifteen seconds worried that I was listening to another grand-standing sales pitch from another stuffed shirt... but as soon as I got to a minute and 16 seconds, I knew why some friends had told me to go watch the clip, and I spent the rest of the time wanting to stand up and cheer. I might have even done so. In the quiet of my basement, in front of my computer, there are no witnesses to say that I didn't. I just may have done it.

And yes, I rather like your mom's philosophy about the speed of government, and how it can be a good thing.
