Libba Bray on education, ambitions, love, and life in general.

About a third of the way through, I started mentally picking favorite quotes to put up here to convince you all to read it. About two-thirds of the way through, I gave up - there were too many bits that are funny or heartbreaking or just authentically true.

So trust me, take a few minutes out of your day, and go read it. Yes, I know it's long. Yes, I know this is the Internet and anything that takes longer than thirty seconds is outside your attention span. Yes, you could write a tl;dr version, but the beauty and truthfulness of her answer lies in its roundabout and disorganized style.

Just read it. It's worth your time.

This stuff took me years to learn. I am resentful that it was not on the syllabus for any of my classes.

PS: This is what passes for 'long' these days? It's no wonder kids don't know this stuff.

Remind me to send you my copy of Going Bovine when I've unpacked it. I think you'd appreciate Bray's special brand of crazy. :)

Is it anything like James Thurber's brand? Patrick McManus? Tom Bodett? Or... dare I ask... Wodehouse?

No...and I don't have any better way to describe it, except that it's in much the same vein as this post, and her blog in general. Her first series was rather more staid and structured because she kept getting "this is too out-there" when she submitted writing in her usual style. So she did her first series, which sold moderately well, and then wrote Going Bovine, which is full of the crazy to the point of confusing fans of her previous series, and also won the Michael J. Printz award. And (I think (http://roseneko.livejournal.com/339855.html)) well worth reading.

Then I shall eagerly await its arrival. (: In the meantime I'll read textbooks nonstop so that my brain is more receptive to the crazy.
